During the Montreal PAHO/WHO Conference on Intellectual Disability, a repertory of innovative experiences pertaining to social integration and participation and developed in Latin America was presented. The purpose of this document is to facilitate an exchange between different actors in the field and to give visibility to local initiatives. Furthermore, the Montreal Conference aims to establish permanent bridges of communication between participants so that they can identify, in light of these innovative experiences, general principles related to the development of policies, the organization of services, the establishment of partnerships with families and close ones, and the implication of local communities, in order to promote the rights and social participation of persons with an intellectual disability.
The selected innovative experiences have many characteristics common such as promoting integration and social participation of individuals with an intellectual disability as well as allowing them to develop their competencies and obtain as such recognition. They correspond to different age groups as well as areas of life or intervention (family, school, work, rights, training, sensibilization campaigns, etc.) and emanate from different countries.
Mme Andrea Aznar, Argentinean psychologist and coordinator of ITINERIS ( one of the selected innovative experiences) presented to those attending the Conference a summary of the seven selected innovative experiences. Even though Miss Aznar's text has been translated in English, alas it was not possible for us to do the same with the repertory itself, which remains in the language favoured by Cervantes, … Spanish. |
